Queen Of The Organ...

Today's shuffle through up this little gem from The Queen Of The Organ, Shirley Scott. Taken from her 1972 album, Lean On Me on the Cadet label, Carla's Dance showcases perfectly her virtuosity on the Hammond...

  1. Scott,
I didn't expect to like this one, as I'm not much of an organ fan, but before I knew it I was bopping around in my seat.

  2. Scott, I don't know this one (and it sounds great), but I have a couple of her albums from around 1964, For Members Only and Great Scott!!. Do you know them? Both albums had orchestration conducted by Oliver Nelson. There is one really wonderful moment... The Blues Ain't Nothin' But Some Pain... It's special because she actually sings on it. As I understand it, Scott hated the sound of her own voice, but Nelson got her to come out of her shell for a moment. The delivery is vulnerable, as you would expect, but it's perfect for this song. Let me know if you don't have it.

  3. Hi Marie - not usually me cup of tea either, but that organ is quite addictive when it gets going...
Brian - I like the sound of Great Scott :-) I don't know them, Lean On Me is the only one I own. Will try and see if I can listen to The Blues Ain't Nothin' on Spotify, thanks for the recommend. And thanks for the kind words over on Linear Tracking Lives, one of the finds for me in 2014 along with Unthought of, though, somehow.
