On my shopping trip to Fopp the other day I picked up a copy of Betty Wright's majestic 1968 debut album, My First Time Around. Her confident, self assured vocals belie the fact that unbelievably, it was recorded when she was only 14 years old. With songs about men you should be ashamed to know and regretting the morning after the night before, she certainly showed a maturity far beyond her tender years. Another example of a soul singer that should be far better known than she actually is, Betty Wright is so much more than "that singer that sang Clean Up Woman", as someone described her to me recently.
