Some Detroit Garage...

Some minimalist, bluesy, garage rock tonight courtesy of Detroit's The Gories. One of the best garage bands ever, The Gories only released three albums in their all too short time together but what a triumvirate of primal, exuberant Rock 'n' Roll records they were. No bass, two guitars, primitive drumming and Mick Collins' soulful wail combined to maximum effect on three albums that other pretenders could only dream of making. For me the second album, produced by none other than Alex Chilton is the standout. From the DJ shout out of  “This here’s the Gories from Detroit; hot of the press. It’s gonna jump on you baby and it’s gonna stay in your dress. Here it comes!”  at the start of the album you just know you are in for a real treat. Link Wray, The Sonics, The Cramps, Bo Diddley and many others are distilled into a sound that is uniquely The Gories.

    1. All 3 albums are great Jamie, but the second one is a good starting point...

  4. I keep reading this lot as The Gorgies, but they don't sound like they come from Edinburgh. That Detroit Breakdown sounds like early Gun Club (well, I suppose that should be the other way round)

    1. Hi George, yes I think it's safe to say that The Gorgies had been listening to quite a lot of The Cramps and The Gun Club when they were starting out..
