Some Sunday Soul...
Spotted by James Brown while working as an usherette, Doris Troy began her career singing backing vocals for the likes of Solomon Burke and The Drifters before releasing the self penned Just One Look on Atlantic in the early 60's. Although she had a few hits of her own, she spent large parts of her career as a much sought after backing singer, with her formidable voice gracing recordings by The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Dusty amongst many others. Nicknamed Mama Soul by her many fans, she even managed to get her own stage show, based on her career, performed at the West end in the 90's where she was played at different times by Chaka Khan, Deniece Williams and Mica Paris. Not one vocal gymnastic in sight, just a great, honest vocalist who could sing soul, blues, pop and gospel and make it all sound effortless...
