Velveteen...
Almost 5 years of doing the blog and I have never posted any Goth bands. I've done posts on Country, Doo-Wop, Soul, plenty of Indie and most other genres in between, but no Goth. Is Goth even a genre in its own right ? That will be rectified forthwith tonight with a track from Leeds' finest Goths, The Rose Of Avalanche, just in case there are any Goths who view the blog who feel they are not being catered for. Velveteen, released in 1986, was a tribute to the German chanteuse Nico and was released round about the time of them supporting The Mission. I may have been at one of the gigs where they were supporting The Mission, at Glagow Uni, but for the only time ever at a gig I was refused entry for being a tad drunk, of which I am obviously not proud....Looking back maybe it was a blessing in disguise that I never got in, even if it didn't seem that way at the time. I lost a pair of shoes that night as well, but that is a whole different story.
Having listened to Velveteen tonight for the first time in years it doesn't really sound that Gothy, it would fit nicely into the shoegazer category. Whatever pigeonhole it goes in does not detract from it being a great song in a vintage year for music...

I had this 12" and a couple of their other singles. I went through a closet goth phase in my teens, buying the music but not not really adopting the style. Thought it was a good record, but it hasn't aged terribly well in my opinion. But then, not a lot of stuff from this time did!
ReplyDeleteIt hasn't aged as well as some others from that era but still sounds pretty good. Like yourself I went through a phase of liking the music but stopped short of the style side of it.
DeleteI would say this is a goth record Scott, "woo-hoo"s and all. Have you played the Boddie Company set yet? Like it?
ReplyDeleteI have indeed George, really enjoying it. May have to encroach on your Sunday territory and post a few Gospel numbers...
DeleteI'm sorry, but I'm just too distracted by the thought of you losing a pair of shoes and I want to know more!
ReplyDeleteForget to say in the post I ended up on an expressway with no shoes, which just adds to the bizarre end to the evening...
DeleteI'm ever more intrigued....
DeleteIt was a very odd evening, thankfully never to be repeated over the years...
DeleteCouldn't abide fucking Goths!
ReplyDeleteGood to have you back Drew, have missed these pithy comments. Hope you had a good break...

ReplyDeleteDid I ever tell you about the time that I got on a bus the evening Fields of the Nephilim came to town? The upstairs deck was full of Goths emptying bags of flour over each other in preparation for the gig. It was like an explosion in a Homepride factory. Madness.
ReplyDeleteGreat image, never got the whole white face thing...
