I have to admit to not having heard today's singer until the tail end of last year. Quite how I managed to get this far in life without hearing this voice is hard to believe. I was just looking through some blogs on the net and came across the wonderfully titled Be Bop Wino and found a post from 2011on Varetta Dillard and was blown away by the power of her voice. There's a great CD that you can get, that came out in 2013, called Mercy Mr Percy that collects together pretty much everything she ever recorded and is well worth buying if you like today's track. Essentially more blues than soul I suppose but I feel the soul in her voice gains her entry onto Soul Sunday...
That's Why I Cry
What a terrific R&B song, great guitar, earthy vocal. a TOPTASTIC tune Scott.A new name to me, too.
ReplyDeleteMuch better than Phoebe!
ReplyDeleteLove it. Not heard of her before. Cheers Scott
ReplyDeleteApparently I have heard Varetta before. When I downloaded the tune , it appears I have another couple of tracks on "Voodoo Voodoo: Feisty Fifties Females". I think that feisty is a very appropriate word.
ReplyDeleteNew to me and bloody great!
ReplyDeleteAs I said in the post I was quite literally blown away when I heard her last year, really glad that all you guys have enjoyed the track. Well worth buying the CD mentioned in the post, and well worth checking out the Be Bop Wino blog - loads of great stuff on there that I had never heard before.
ReplyDeleteWow! Haven't heard Varetta D in 20 years. Used to play "Mercy Mr Percy" in our 'Record Shop' in Jersey all the time, superb squeeky vocal good time gal. And ideal for SYB VIII.
ReplyDeleteIt may be on my wish list for SYB VIII, she is quite a new name to me, can't believe i had never heard her until recently.
