Some Edinburgh Garage...

A couple of weeks back George posted the excellent Two By Two from 80's Edinburgh garage combo The Green Telescope, which got me to thinking about the band that followed. After 6 years under said name they changed their name to The Thanes Of Cawdor, which was obviously a bit of a mouthful, so they shortened it simply to The Thanes. 1987 saw the release of their glorious self titled debut album that continued their love of 60's garage bands. I remember seeing them live supporting The Soup Dragons and they literally blew them off the stage. The album had quite a few original numbers on it alongside some crackin' covers of tracks from the likes of The Allusions and The Zipps. For fans of bands like The Seeds, The Sonics and The Kinks you could do worse than treat yourself to a wonderful Best Of The Thanes that you can purchase here for less than a fish supper....

History Lesson Of The Day - A Thane was the title given to a local royal official in medieval Eastern Scotland, equivalent to a count, who was at the head of an administrative and socio-economic unit known as a shire or thanage. In the play of the same name Macbeth holds the title of The Thane Of Glamis. After the declaration of the forthcoming execution of the treacherous Thane of Cawdor, during wartime, King Duncan names Macbeth the new Thane Of Cawdor,  in addition to Glamis.

  1. Scott, Never heard of them specifically, yet, I feel like I listen to them all of the time. Your description of their sound is spot on, and I love it. Must do more digging.

  3. Hi Brian, the Best Of mentioned is a good place to start. I have a feeling most of their other stuff is hard to come by these days.
