More Icelandic Electronica...

Formed in 2013 in Reykjavik, Vok released their debut  EP on the Icelandic Indie label Record Records, following their first place finish at the notorious Musiktilrauner battle of the bands contest. Listening to them I can hear bites of Massive Attack, Air and Portishead amongst others. There definitely must be something in those geysers in Reykjavik with all these really interesting electronica bands doing the rounds at the moment. Vok do stand out from most of the other electronica bands however with their use of saxophone and some lovely guitar playing in their tracks which is reminiscent in parts of The XX. As far as I am aware they have only released the one EP to date, with a new one due any day and an LP hopefully later in the year. The usual adjectives apply - ethereal, dreamy - but watching their live footage they also have a self belief and confidence that could see them take off outside of their home country this year.

  1. A bit out of my comfort zone but quite pleasant. Like Young Karin another lovely voice -as you say it must be the water from those geysers

  2. A bit out of my comfort zone too CC, but I seem to listening to a lot of these new electronica bands recently and finding something i like in them. I think it might be the vocals that are drawing me in. I've always liked singers like Bjork and Liz Fraser and you can hear their influence in most of these vocalists.

  3. Like this one a lot, Scott. Would be great in a movie about some kind of long journey. Sounds very familiar, but I'm sure I have never heard this one before... I'm sure a bolt of lightning will strike me at some point and I will realize who they sound like to me.

    1. Totally agree Brian, would be great in a road movie. There were so many bands popping into my head when I was listening to them, which is no bad thing, especially when it was bands like The Cocteaus and Portishead.

    1. There's definitely something in the air over in Iceland at the moment CC, Vox and Young Karin are just the tip of the iceberg. Most of the songs aren't immediate but after a few listens I was hooked.
