Release Me...
The Like released their debut album, Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking, in 2005 but it would be another 5 years before we were to get a follow up in 2010's Release Me. Produced by Mark Ronson, Release Me was quite a departure from their grunge lite debut. In the intervening 5 years they must have spent quite a bit of time soaking up the music of the best 60's girl groups with a fair bit of Blondie, The Go Go's and even some Voice Of The Beehive thrown into the mix. Yes, it does wear its influences proudly on its sleeve but that is no bad thing when it sounds as good as this. Melodic, hook laden and unashamedly retro, this is pop music of the highest quality, with some superb vocals courtesy of Z Berg.

Never bought the second album as I got bored of the first one really quickly but I may have to give it a listen as that track is quite good.
ReplyDeleteI think you would really enjoy the second album Drew, almost sounds like a different band. Very 60's sounding with some great 3 minute pop songs.
DeleteLike Drew, I was fond of that first album for a few minutes. Unlike Drew, I got the second album and really liked it. Those gals were quite young when they recorded that first one. Lots of growing up by that second effort. I seem to recall some personnel changes, but I might be wrong about that.
ReplyDeleteThink you are right about the personnel changes Brian. The two albums sound like two different bands.
DeleteMaybe it's just me but I am hearing shades of Kirsty MacColl. Excellent stuff
ReplyDeleteDefinitely shades of Kirsty in there CC, also a bit of Tracey Ullman ?
ReplyDeleteYup
