Some Sunday Soul...

I think it would be a pretty decent guess that most people know Percy Sledge for the classic When A Man Loves A Woman and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If he had only recorded that one song that would have been enough to cement his place as one of the great soul singers. Astonishing to think that it was his first single, but fortunately for us he recorded many more soul standards over the years.

Heartbroken ballads about loneliness, attraction and betrayal were his trademark, all sung in that pure, almost crying vocal style that was uniquely his. Today's song was the follow up and although not quite equaling the chart success of his debut it is, in my opinion, every bit the equal song. Easily one of my favourite songs of all time, it really is a thing of rare beauty..

Warm And Tender Love

  1. I love this song but When A Man Loves A Woman is different class. I remember bein g pretty miffed when it was used on that Levis ad as I had been putting it on compilation tapes for girls I had a fancy for, for a year or two at that point.

  2. Guilty of not knowing this song. Love it. Perhaps it's because I haven't heard it like When a. Man... Having said that, I could hear the hit every day of the week.
