Suggestion...

The word Fugazi popped up in the film Donnie Brasco with Al Pacino when Don Da Jeweler gets approached privately by a real mafioso, Lefty Ruggiero who wanted to sell a hot diamond ring. After a quick inspection, Brasco pronounced it a fugazi - a counterfeit. After a bit of verbal sparring, the two men go to find the man who gave the ring to Lefty, relieving him of his Porsche in lieu of the fake diamond ring. From that point on, Donnie is in with Lefty, a troubled, lonely man who wants someone to follow in his footsteps.

I can't say that I have followed Fugazi's career to any great extent, but there is nothing counterfeit about one of the finest post punk bands to emerge from The States. I still vividly recall the first time I heard Suggestion when they appeared in the late 80’s on Snub TV. It sounded awesome them and listening to it almost 30 years later it still does. Taken from their first album, 13 Songs, this was the track that introduced most people to the band that Ian MacKaye formed after dissolving the hardcore group Minor Threat. Written from the perspective of a female, speaking out against sexual harassment and assault, it still stands as an incredibly powerful piece of work and sadly, the lyrics are just as pertinent today as they were back in the 80’s.
